NATIONAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY ACTION PLAN (NEEAP)
In October 2016, SEU finalized the preparation of Bahrain’s first National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP). The Plan was endorsed by the Cabinet in January 2017. NEEAP sets the target, and proposes comprehensive set of initiatives to achieve the target and unlock energy efficiency potential in the Kingdom.
NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY ACTION PLAN (NREAP)
In October 2016 SEU finalized the preparation of Bahrain’s first National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP). The Plan was endorsed by the Cabinet in January 2017. NREAP identifies feasible renewable energy options for Bahrain, sets the targets, and proposes policies and initiatives to achieve the targets.
The Kingdom of Bahrain’s Vision 2030 is to protect the natural environment, reduce carbon emissions, minimize pollution and promote the sourcing of more sustainable energy. Net Metering is one of the three policies envisioned in the National Renewable Energy Action Plan to encourage the uptake of renewable energy in the Kingdom. This policy allows individuals, companies and industries to install solar and other renewable energy systems on their properties, connect these systems to the EWA electricity network and benefit from this clean and renewable energy source.
Utility – Scale Solar Farm
100 MW Solar Farm is Bahrain’s first utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) project on a landfill site. This will be the first solar PV IPP development. Electricity and Water Authority of the Kingdom of Bahrain invites all qualified local and international developers to submit Proposals for Concept for the development of this project. The Project, planned to be located on the Askar landfill site in the Southern Governorate, and shall include site preparation measures to render the site suitable for PV development.

In 2017, the Sustainable Energy Unit has commissioned EMD International A/S, leading Danish consultancy in the field of wind resource assessment to develop a comprehensive wind atlas for the Kingdom of Bahrain. The wind resources map has been developed using modern flow modelling techniques to calculate the wind speeds using an advanced microscale-mesoscale downscaling model approach.
Green Building Code & Labelling Program
The Green Building Code is a document being developed to further expand on existing building energy efficiency codes. The aim of the Green Building Code is to lay out clear guidelines for both new buildings in the Kingdom of Bahrain as well as retrofit projects to ensure a minimum level of energy efficiency is achieved. Key areas of concern are the efficiency of energy consuming systems such as HVAC (air conditioning), lighting, motors and pumps, and the systems effecting the thermal efficiency of the building such as the building envelope and construction techniques employed.
